Robust, reliable 100Base-T1 PHY for confined space applications
The support of the new PHY base unit DP83TC811S-Q1 for the Serial Gigabit Media Independent Interface (SGMII), its small housing and its integrated diagnostic functions enable designers to bring more intelligence to space-constrained automotive applications in the areas of body electronics, infotainment and cluster solutions and driver assistance systems (ADAS) via Ethernet connectivity.
The first 100BASE-T1 device with SGMII support, the DP83TC811S-Q1 provides greater design flexibility by allowing connections to multiple switches and interfaces. For example, the DP83TC811S-Q1 supports the full range of Media Independent Interfaces (MII), allowing designers to implement Ethernet connectivity with various media access controllers (MACs) and processors such as TI’s Jacinto automotive processors. To help the system monitor and detect cable breakage, temperature and voltage overloads and electrostatic discharge (ESD), the DP83TC811S-Q1 provides a diagnostic toolkit with a patent-pending ESD monitor.
In addition to reducing the need for external components, the DP83TC811S-Q1’s 6 x 6 mm Wettable Flank package can reduce solution dimensions by up to 50%. In addition, the module complies with the IEEE 802.3bw standard and is OPEN Alliance qualified. This allows the use of unshielded single twisted pair copper cables, reducing both the weight and cost of the cables.
Developed using one of TI’s low-power process technologies, the DP83TC811S-Q1 has lower power consumption, which reduces heat generation and thus makes it possible to reduce the distances between components. Apart from this, the device offers power-saving operating modes such as Standby, Disable and Wake-on-LAN.
The integrated diagnostic toolkit provides cable diagnostics, temperature and voltage sensors and an ESD monitor. Engineers can thus develop designs that can withstand ESD and voltage events. Diagnostic features allow designers to continuously monitor the integrity of the Ethernet connection. The additional ESD protection up to 8 kV provided by the DP83TC811S-Q1 also helps to protect the device against high-voltage faults.
SGMII uses only four pins instead of twelve as with the Reduced Gigabit Media Independent Interface (RGMII). This reduces the PCB area and the number of tracks and also makes the layout easier. The integration of a Physical Medium Dependent (PMD) filter, MII series terminations, PMD termination and power supply filter components also helps reduce the need for external, discrete circuits, leaving designers more room to implement additional features. With a latency of only 140 ns, the DP83TC811S-Q1 enables latency-critical systems such as driver assistance systems to react and communicate faster.
The DP83TC811S-Q1 in a VQFNP (Very thin Quad Flat No-lead Package) Wettable Flank 36-pin package is now available at the TI Store and from authorized distributors for $2.25 (1,000 units or more).
