Rockley Photonics raises $52 million
Investors include a strategic partner Morningside Technology Ventures and numerous private investors. This latest funding round takes the total raised by Rockley to date to $165 million.
Mahesh Karanth, chief financial officer at Rockley, said the money would support implementation of the company’s business plan including co-packaging of devices for opto-ASICs and data center connectivity, and lidar and consumer applications.
Silicon photonics was once limited the electro-optics around optical fibers and long-haul communications but over many years it has been getting closer to individual boxed systems and thence to inter-board and even intra-board communications. Applications that were the domain of electronics are evolving to include optics in a variety of ways including data centers, 5G, AI, autonomy, machine vision and healthcare.
Yole Développement has estimated the global market for silicon photonics was worth US$500 million in 2018 with growth predicted to exceed US$3.5 billion by 2025.
