Rohm buys Japanese fab for SiC boost – update

Rohm completed the purchase of a fab in Japan to boost its production of silicon carbide (SiC) power devices in November 2023.

The Kunitomi Plant in Miyazaki (above) is being bought from Solar Frontier which previously used it to make CIGS solar panels with cells built with copper, indium, gallium and selenium.

The acquisition is scheduled to take place in October 2023 the plant will be added to the Rohm Group’s main production bases with operation starting at the end of 2024. The value of the deal was not disclosed.

“This acquisition enables a fast production expansion by utilizing existing infrastructure. This way, Rohm will continue to quickly and reliably supply its customers,” said Wolfram Harnack, President at Rohm Semiconductor Europe.

The company has a number of significant supply deals in Europe for SIC power devices for electric vehicles, including Vitesco and Semikron.

Solar Frontier plans to lease part of the site and buildings as its business office.

ROHM completed the acquisition of the assets of Solar Frontier’s former Kunitomi Plant located in Japan, on November 7, 2023. The plant will be operated by LAPIS Semiconductor, a subsidiary of the Rohm Group, as its second Miyazaki plant. It will become the Group’s main production site for SiC power devices and is aiming to start operation in 2024.
