The new capital, equivalent to a C funding round, will give the company additional resources and tools to accelerate development of its next-generation FlexPhy IC and drive the adoption of its technology through strategic partnerships. The funding will also allow MultiPhy to expand its business operations to better support customers and strengthen the company’s leadership in the market.

A provider of analog solution, Semtech made public it took part in the funding, becoming one of the largest shareholders of MultiPhy. Leveraging MultiPhy’s advanced-node CMOS DSP and Semtech’s PMD (laser driver and TIA), the companies plan to offer a complete PHY and PMD solution to enable 100G modules requiring only single lane optics. 
MultiPhy’s first product already in volume production and deployment is a 100G transceiver chipset using adaptive DSP enhanced direct detection algorithms to multiplex WDM signals in the digital domain rather than relying on complex optics.

A full transceiver solution, the MP1100Q/MP1101Q chipset is said to cut module BOM by as much as 50% for 100G solutions. It consists of a quad 25Gb/s-28Gb/s CMOS DEMUX receiver chip (the MP1100Q) and the MP1101Q, a 40nm CMOS MUX transmitter providing the standard 10 to 4 gearbox function needed for all 100G optical transmission.

The new 100Gbps per wavelength PAM4 technology should enable the elimination of parallel optical solutions and MUX and DEMUX components used in duplex fiber solutions, requiring just a single laser and optical receiver for each optical module.

The company is also developing 100Gb/s DSP-based PHY chips and sees 4x100G 400Gb/s PHY chips as a natural evolution further on its roadmap.

"100G is just starting now and it will take a few years to roll out" explained Ami Lifshitz, Marcom Manager at MultiPhy Ltd, "we’ll develop 400Gb/s solutions when market demand is really there".

Together with photonics partners, the company is also exploring the integration of silicon photonics with its PHY CMOS chips to further streamline server connectivity.
