Sacked Rambus CEO to take reins at Imagination

Black’s employment contract at US-based IP licensor Rambus was terminated back in July 2017 (see Rambus gives CEO the sack). Black had led Rambus, a broad-based developer of semiconductor and technology intellectual property, since 2011. The termination was related to an incident, not fully disclosed, where Black’s conduct “fell short of the company’s standards,” the Rambus board of directors said at the time.

Li was appointed CEO of Imagination when the company was acquired by Canyon Bridge Capital Partners LLC (Palo, Alto, Calif.), a venture capital firm that is managing funds provided by China. Li will step down this month as both Imagination CEO and chairman of the Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA) to establish an independent SoC company.

Prior to leading Rambus, Black was CEO of Upek and Wavecom. Earlier in his career he held leadership roles with Agere Systems, Gemplus, IBM, and Motorola.

Ray Bingham, founding partner at Canyon Bridge Capital Partners Inc. and Executive Chairman, Imagination said: “I have worked with Ron previously and have considerable respect for his leadership capabilities, technical understanding and strategic thinking.”

Black said: “The value Imagination brings to our customers in GPU, AI, and connectivity is the basis of its position as a world leading independent IP supplier. I am going to ensure that both Imagination and its partners can reap the full potential of our ground-breaking IP.”
