The battery will serve as the primary power source for the spacecraft, and the partnership represents a new U.S. customer for Saft.
The lightweight, high-energy battery will qualify to endure the rigors of life in space and contain 40 VL 48E cells in an 8S5P configuration, packaged in eight identical modules. The 32.8 V, 240 Ah power source will provide active balancing electronics that maintain consistent cell voltage levels to meet the high cycling requirements of the LEO satellite.
Development for the project is underway with delivery scheduled for 2014.
