Sales of opto, sensors, discretes stabilize amid Covid crisis

Unlike the market for digital ICs, which has – on balance – benefitted from the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the OSD sector has suffered from the lockdowns and recessionary trends. However, sales of OSD components have stabilized more recently and some areas have shown signs of recovery in 2H20, the market research firm said.

IC Insights reckons the combined OSD market will fall 4.4 percent in 2020 to $82.3 billion. This compares to IC Insight’s previous projection of a 6.1 percent drop given in April 2020.

This fall will be followed by a modest 7.7 percent rebound in 2021 to lift the total OSD market to an annual value of $88.6 billion.

IC Insights said the OSD rebound would be limited by ongoing pandemic concerns and actions that may linger until vaccines are available worldwide, probably not until the beginning of the 2H21.

The updated OSD forecast shows only three of the 20 main product categories in optoelectronics, sensors/actuators, and discretes achieving sales growth in 2020. These are 6.0 percent for laser transmitters, 0.5% for total image sensors and 1.4 percent for actuators. The 2021 rebound is expected to occur across all 20 main OSD product categories.
