SamacSys PCB CAD symbol libraries, free from RS

RS has extended its relationship with SamacSys (Wallingford, UK), supplier of high-quality PCB schematic symbols and footprints. RS is now offering direct access to schematic symbols and footprints from SamacSys, for all PCB components, via its new PCB Part Library service. Access to the parts library is free of charge; PCB Part Libraries are currently available for Altium, Mentor Graphics, Cadence, Zuken, Pulsonix, Target 3001, Eagle and RS’ own DesignSpark PCB.

The part models can be downloaded directly from RS webpages under the Technical Reference section. Once selected, the PCB schematics and footprints are immediately available for use and placement by the user, in the desired file format for their particular design tool. You can, RS says, find schematic symbols and PCB footprints in several ways; search via the Component Search Engine available from RS’ own site; or directly via the RS Online websites; or with a recently introduced Obsolescence Manager tool. You can also get to the same place with starting point of alternative sites such as Traceparts, OEMsecrets or on the component manufacturers’ own websites.

If the part you are using is not in the library, you can create a model for it, either by selecting a suitable outline and entering information such as pin allocation – such “DIY” entries are automatically checked for completeness and compliance – or by submitting a reques for it to added to the library.

“These part libraries can represent significant savings for any maker or company developing electronic products,” said Cameron Ward, Senior Vice President of Innovation at RS. “These high-quality schematic symbols and component footprints, when used with a leading PCB design tool, can mean an error-free design process for engineers, saving them both time and cost in building their own part libraries.”

“The DesignSpark community and tool resource is an important and fast-growing initiative for electronics design engineers that enables them to rapidly create prototypes and bring products to market quickly,” said Alex MacDougall, Managing Director at SamacSys. “This new library service available via RS brings the free SamacSys parts models to an even wider audience.”

RS adds that studies have shown that up to 50% of an electronics design engineer’s time can be spent on sourcing and managing data for component models used within design software tools. High-quality component models can relieve electronics engineers and PCB designers from the time-consuming and potentially error-prone task of manually curating their part libraries.
