The mobile communications modem in the phone is made up of a CDMA/EVDO Rev. A chip from Via Telecom Inc. (San Diego, California) and the reworked Samsung LTE baseband. The baseband is "nearly half the cost of prior chip’s $23 price tag," ABI said.
ABI said that the price reduction was significant in allowing rapid adoption of LTE.
Other things found during the teardown include:
- the phone uses a 1.2-GHz capable OMAP4460 as its application processor rather than an Exynos processor from Samsung;
- NFC support is provided with an NFC antenna embedded in the battery;
- CSR plc provides global positioning by satellite (GPS) chip;
- Broadcom provides combo chip offering Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and FM radio;
- Avago provides power amplifier for LTE and front-end for GPS.
