Samsung hosts OpenAI, Softbank CEOs to discuss AI alliance
Lee Jae-yong, the chair of Samsung Electronics, has hosted a meeting with Sam Altman and Masayoshi Son, the CEOs of OpenAI and SoftBank Group respectively, in Seoul, Korea.
The three leaders met in Samsung’s Seocho office building to discuss plans for a Korea-US-Japan alliance in artificial intelligence and the previously announced US$500 billion ‘Stargate Project’ according to the Korean Maeil business newspaper.
Lee was active only hours after being cleared of fraud charges related to merger and acquisition accounting that have hung over the Samsung chair for nearly a decade. It is thought that meeting is indicative of a desire to give Samsung a makeover and to dispel fears that the company is losing its way.
Ahead of the meeting Son was quoted by Maeil saying: “I will give chairman Lee and update on the Stargate project” and “I will discuss potential cooperation with Samsung Electronics.”
The extreme ambition of the Stargate project means that it will require many major corporations to pitch in. Son declined to tell reporters whether he would ask Samsung to invest in the project.
Lee has recently met with the leaders of multiple global technology companies – including Amazon, Meta and Qualcomm – to discuss collaboration on AI, the report said.
