The cells in the Samsung SDI have a lower resistance as a result of materials and manufacturing to provide a driving range of up to 600km and can charge to 80% in 20 minutes. Mass production of the cell is slated for 2021. The battery packswill be built at all three plants,in Hungary as well as Korea and China.
THe copmany also showed a new “integrated battery module”. A conventional EV battery module which consists of 12 cells has a capacity of 2 to 3kWh, while the integrated battery module supports over 24 cells with a higher capacity of 6 to 8kWh.
Samsung SDI has also developed a “21700” cylindrical battery cell measuring 21mm in diameter and 70mm long, a format that is becoming popular for EV battery packs.
