Samsung shows development of flexible display aimed at foldable smartphone
When opened out the display is 7.3 inch diagonal size, and when folded roughly half of that. According to reports it has a resolution of 1,536 by 2,152 pixels that reduces to 840 by 1,960 in the smartphone form factor with a pixel density of 420ppi. When folded, the Infinity Flex has a 4.58-inch display with an aspect ratio of 21:9 and when unfolded, tablet version seems to be the primary mode of operation with 4.2:3 aspect ratio.
This makes the screen smaller but higher resolution than the FlexPai OLED screen launched by Royole Corp., a few days previously (see Royole beats Apple and Samsung with foldable smartphone).
Samsung did not give information on the minimum bend radius or cycling endurance. Nor did Samsung disclose whether what it has is an OLED display, which has become the display technology of choice for mobiles because of strong saturated colors. However, it shares the Infinity name with a previous line of AMOLED displays.
Samsung is expected to launch the foldable smartphone/tablet at CES 2019 in January but is in a race with Huawei to enter the smartphone market. Google Android is reportedly providing support for foldable displays suggesting that Samsung, Huawei, Royole and others will make this a definite product category in 2019. It seems unlikely that Apple could be afford to neglect this opportunity or fall behind.
