Samsung smart tracking tag uses NB-IoT
The Samsung Connect Tag is offered as “a new way to keep track of the loved ones, valuables and all the matters in life.” According to the company, it is the world’s first consumer mobile product to use narrowband network technology (NB-IoT, Cat.M1) – a communication standard specifically designed for small data utilization, low power consumption, and the ability to securely connect to the internet for optimal location services.
The device will work with GPS, Wi-Fi-based positioning (WPS), and Cell ID for accurate location information both indoors and outdoors. Measuring 4.21 cm wide and 1.19 cm thick, the device comes with a ring designed to allow easy attachment to objects such as a child’s backpack, a dog’s collar, or a set of keys.
Based on the Tizen operating system, the Connect Tag is tied to the SmartThings ecosystem and works with the user’s smart home appliances through Works with SmartThings. The device can be set to trigger smart devices to turn on when the user approaches, or to notify the user when the tag enters a pre-defined zone location.
An on-demand function will allow requesting any Connect Tag’s location when desired, and a “Send my location” function will send a user’s current location to their guardian. Periodic location notifications will show a trace of a user’s location record.
The device is IP68 water and dustproof rated. Its battery can last for up to seven days on a single charge.
The Connect Tag will be showcased at the Samsung Developer Conference 2017 in San Francisco. It will be available for purchase in select countries in the coming months.
