Before Cheil, already another Korean enterprise has aired interest in acquiring Dresden-based Novaled – the conglomerate Doosan. Novaled maintains already strong ties to Samsung: Through its Venture Investment Corporation SVIC, Samsung has invested an undisclosed amount into Novaled. According to media sources, SVIC is one of the largest financiers of Novaled which has been launched in 2001 by the Dresden Technical University and the Fraunhofer Institute.

Novaled develops manufacturing processes and materials for OLEDs and is said to hold significant expertise in OLED structures which feature particularly long lifetime. In 2011, the company generated sales of 17.4 million euros and a profit of 3.6 million euros. Experts expect that the rising global demand for OLED products bestowed significant growth to Novaled. In 2012, Novaled took the first measures for an initial public offering in the United States.
