Samsung has displaced Huawei at the top of the list for filing patents at the European Patent Office (EPO) in 2024.

The company filed 5.107 patents in 2024, ahead of Huawei of China and LG in Korea for the first time since 2020. Qualcomm was fourth, the top US filer, with aerospace group RTX that includes Raytheon at fifth.

The list shows a focus in Europe on patents on computer technology (+5.9%) and transport (+4.8%)

Siemens was again first among European companies in the list with European Patent Office’s applicant ranking 2024 with 1,830 patent applications at sixth, although this is relatively small proportion of the 5300 patents worldwide in 2024. Germany is represented in the top 10 list by Siemens, BASF and Robert Bosch and with France were the two top filing countries.

Overall, the US maintained its position as the top country of origin for European patent applications, followed by Germany, Japan, People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Korea.

However the strongest growth among the larger filing countries with over 5 000 applications was seen in Switzerland (+3.2%) and the UK (+3.1%). Switzerland also remained the lead country in terms of patents per capita, followed by several Nordic countries.

European EPO member states accounted for 43% of filings, while 57% came from outside Europe. Korea, with Samsung, saw the strongest growth (+4.2%) and China saw an 0.5% increase, while companies and inventors from the US and Japan dropped 0.8% and 2.4% respectively.

The number of European patent applications originating in the 39 EPO member states increased again in 2024 with 86 296 applications overall, up 0.3%, although filings from the EU 27 member states were down 0.4% at 68 392.
