Samsung’s next phone to include real-time language translation
Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S24 smartphone is set to include real-time language translation using processors within the phone, according to a Nikkei report.
The ‘AI Live Translate Call’ feature is based Samsung’s Gauss generative AI model and proprietary processors within the Galaxy S24, which is due to be announced in January, the Japanese newspaper said.
The real-time interpreter is two-way and comes with “almost no delay,” the report said adding that allows conversations even when the other party has a phone without the feature. All the translation work is done locally on the Samsung phone. It can display translations on the screen.
It was not reported whether the in-phone translation has to be supported by any intermittant or occasional cloud-based services such as downloads of additional or specialised vocabulary.

Initially the feature will support translation between English and Spanish, the two most commonly-used languages in the world, before adding Korean, Japanese and then followed by a broader roll out.
Up until now similar features when supported on PCs or phones have required translation using cloud-based software applications and they generally involved too much lag to allow fluent conversation.
Nikkei said that Samsung demonstrated its AI interpretation capabilities at developer events in November.
