Samtec’s Generate 0.80 mm pitch edge card sockets are now available for next-day volume delivery. The HSEC8 series targets high-speed, high-cycle applications where signal integrity, mechanical durability and fast time to market are critical, the company notes.

For eeNews Europe readers designing next-generation computing, industrial or communications hardware, the announcement highlights a readily available interconnect option that combines high-speed performance with flexible mechanical configurations. Immediate delivery and free sampling also address ongoing supply chain and prototyping pressures, according to the release.

Edge Rate contacts for high-speed, high-cycle designs

At the core of the HSEC8 series is Samtec’s proprietary Edge Rate contact system, which is optimized for signal integrity in demanding applications, the company states. Unlike traditional stamped contacts that mate on a cut edge, the Edge Rate contact surface is milled to create a smooth mating interface. According to the release, this reduces wear tracks on the contact, improving durability and extending cycle life.

The smoother contact surface also lowers insertion and withdrawal forces, enabling connectors to be “zippered” during unmating. This characteristic is particularly relevant in systems requiring frequent card insertion and removal, such as test and measurement platforms, instrumentation and modular computing systems.

According to the company, the connectors are intended for use across a broad range of markets, including computers and peripherals, telecommunications, datacom, industrial equipment, medical systems, test and measurement, instrumentation, and military and aerospace applications.

Advantages over two-piece connector systems

Samtec positions the Generate 0.80 mm pitch edge card sockets as an alternative to conventional two-piece connector systems. Edge card connectors are well suited to modular designs, allowing system upgrades or reconfiguration by simply swapping a printed circuit board.

According to the release, the design also supports higher mating cycle counts while maintaining high-speed performance. Micro edge card sockets benefit from a shorter signal path because they eliminate one connector interface, which can contribute to improved signal integrity at higher data rates.

Configuration options and broader portfolio

The HSEC8 series is available in vertical, right-angle and edge-mount orientations, the company notes. Optional features include side latches for increased card retention, board locks and weld tabs for added mechanical strength, and configurations supporting cable assembly mating. The sockets are designed for .062 in or .093 in mating card thicknesses and can be supplied in power/signal combination designs.

The Generate 0.80 mm pitch products form part of Samtec’s wider edge card socket strip portfolio, which spans pitches from 0.50 mm to 2.00 mm. According to the company, the broader range includes multiple orientations and options such as press-fit tails, rugged weld tabs, locks and latches, and PCI Express interconnects, offering designers a scalable path across different performance and mechanical requirements.
