Truck manufacturer Scania and battery producer Northvolt have jointly developed a battery cell for heavy electric vehicles with superior durability. Validation tests show that the lithium-ion cell can power trucks for more than 1.5 million kilometres – equivalent to the entire lifetime of a truck.

Back in 2017, Scania and Northvolt had teamed up to develop and launch a battery cell for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Now the partnership and close cooperation have borne fruit: the two companies have unveiled a prismatic 3.6-volt battery cell with a capacity of 157 Ah, which is designed to withstand an entire truck life of 1.5 million kilometres driven, even in demanding commercial heavy-duty traffic.

The cell is produced at the Northvolt Ett Gigafactory in northern Sweden. It is produced with fossil-free electricity in northern Sweden. Due to the production with “green” energy and the integration of additional sustainable production features at Northvolt Ett, the carbon footprint of this battery cell is estimated to be about one third of that of a comparable industrial reference cell (IVL 2019 lithium-ion cell NMC 111). These values have been determined in accordance with EU legislation using the specifications of the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) EF2.0 database.

Scania also intends to inaugurate a new battery factory in Södertälje, Sweden, later this year, where battery cells will be assembled into battery packs for the production launch of heavy electric trucks.
