Security and positioning features added to cellular modules
New security features include a unique root of trust (RoT) for each device, and access to a scalable pre-shared key (PSK) management system to offer the foundation for advanced security functionalities. The decision to use PSK based security instead of the more complex and computationally intensive public key infrastructure (PKI) approach gives a balance between implementation costs and security protection for IoT applications.
The new SARA-R422M8S module also integrates the u-blox M8 GNSS (global navigation satellite system) receiver and a separate GNSS antenna interface to provide reliable and accurate positioning data simultaneously with LTE communications. The module supports hybrid positioning strategies, to enhance data from satellite constellations with data from the u-blox CellLocate service, ensuring that location data is always available.
