SemiFive Co. Ltd. (Seongnam-si, South Korea), a pioneer of platform-based chip design around the RISC-V processor architecture, has raised $109 million in a Series B funding round.

This brings the total raised by the company since its foundation in 2019 to $147 million. Investors include BonAngels, Game Changer, Korea Investment Partners, LB Investment, Mirae Asset Venture Investment and Pavilion Capital (a subsidiary of Singapore state fund Temasek).

SemiFive emerged as one of set of startups formed to exploit business opportunities around the RISC-V open-source processor architecture (see SiFive creates global network of RISC-V startups). The company was founded with support from RISC-V pioneer SiFive to design and produce semiconductor chips for customers that are customizable.

The latest funding will be used for expansion and to improve its design platform, the company said. SemiFive already has more than 300 employees in the United States, India, Vietnam and Korea.

“We envision ourselves as the new global hub of custom silicon,” said Brandon Cho, CEO and founder of SemiFive, in a statement. “With the strong support from our investors, we are accelerating our strategy in the US which is a pivotal base for business expansion and added capabilities. Anticipating strong growth, we are scaling our sales, customer and technical support organizations.”

The custom silicon chips are designed using Samsung Foundry’s advanced FinFET process nodes. In addition to AI, SemiFive offers design platforms for edge compute, IoT, and data acceleration. The company will also add high performance compute and automotive platforms to its portfolio.
