The platform is based on the energy-efficient s-net wireless protocol for self-organising sensor networks. "It enables the formation of large multi-hop networks, even very big ones with many nodes", a Fraunhofer spokesperson explained. The system is designed to support a very large bandwidth of sensor types – light sensors, intelligent objects, vibration detectors, monitoring of gas and water pipes in industrial environments and similar applications. The bandwidth of 200 kbps limits the application options to some extend and is owed to the energy optimization.

There is no standard architecture or topology, the spokesperson said. "The charm of the architecture is that it can be entirely configured according to the user needs", she said. An application example to be demonstrated at Embedded World will be intelligent containers for industrial automation.

The collaboration with Amber Wireless aims at providing hardware and software components for real-world implementations. For the start, users can expect evaluation kits.
