The first product family which will benefit from the new technology will be the company’s Z5 platform, an industry standard format covering the power spectrum from 1 W to 3 W. The company plans to use the new technology to cover the entire color spectrum from 2600 K through 7000 K. The first product scheduled to be based on the new architecture will be the Z5P which features a maximum luminous flux of up to 140 lm/W and a maximum brightness of 133 lm at a junction layer temperature of 100 °C. The device will be characterized by a low thermal resistance of only 6 degrees per watt.
Seoul Semiconductor Managing Director Manuel Zarauza called the new technology "a huge leap forward" and said the entire lighting industry would benefit from the move. The company however did not provide details of the new chip design.
Seoul Semiconductor plans to use the chip technology not only for the Z5 platform but also for other product families and introduce these products during the course of the months to come. In 2012, the company will roll out a number of LEDs based on the new chip technology.
