The companies have been involved in a series of lawsuits that date back to October 2013. On March 24, 2016 a federal jury in North District of California decided that Enplas actively induced infringement of Seoul’s patented technology with respect to all of the asserted patent claims and that such infringement was willful. The jury ruled that Seoul’s LED TV backlight lens patents are valid and rejected Enplas’s invalidity arguments. The jury awarded Seoul $4.07 million in damages for inducement.
Where infringement is willful it is often the case that the court will award triple the initial sum set by the jury and so Seoul could receive $12 million.
