Sequans teams for world’s smallest LTE-M/NB-IoT RISC-V System-in-Package

Sequans Communications has worked with Skyworks Solutions to develop the world’s smallest 5G Massive IoT SiP (system-in-package).

The SKY66431, launched at the electronica tradeshow this week, combines Sequans’ Monarch 2 modem based around the Andes D15 RISC-V processor core with Skyworks’ RF front-end in a ball grid array BGA package that measures 8.8 x 11.3 x 1.585 mm with a 0.5 or 1 mm ball pitch.

Sequans, based in Paris, France, is pitching the SiP at low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN) using the narrowband-IoT cellular protocol to boost the battery life and reliability of sensor nodes, utility meters, asset trackers, security and alert systems and other battery-powered devices such as wearable medical and fleet management.

The SiP supports downloads of 300kbit/s and 1.1Mbit/s uploads using LTE-M with a 1.4 MHz bandwidth and 120.7 kbit/s downloads and 160 kbit/s uploads using NB-IoT with a 200 kHz bandwidth.

The SKY66431 is a highly integrated multi-band, multi-chip SiP with a native 23 dBm front-end module that benefits from Skyworks’ RF design and advanced packaging expertise. The fully encapsulated silver-free conformal shielding helps boost the performance of the IoT nodes.

The SKY66431 is being certified by a number of industry and regulatory agencies, as well as multiple network operators. This SiP is available now for select customers, with general availability expected in the first quarter of 2023.;
