Sevcon joins forces with Flextronics Automotive
The agreement will enable the companies to combine Sevcon’s motor controllers and onboard systems integration products with Flextronics Automotive’s high-voltage DC/DC converter, charger and battery management technology in developing complete powertrains ranging in size from two-wheeled scooters to passenger cars and even trucks. Sevcon’s motor controllers are particularly designed to work in hybrid and all-electric vehicles.
In addition to developing these powertrain solutions, the companies plan to jointly pursue marketing and sales outreach to automotive OEMs. In this context, Sevcon will act as tier one supplier while Flextronics Automotive will take the part of the manufacturer for all combined product sales. This combination will help relatively small Sevcon to scale its business to meet growing product demand in particular in Germany and Central Europe much faster than it could do on its own, explained Sevcon President and CEO Matt Boyle. He added that with the ability to offer end-to-end solutions and draw upon Flextronics’ high-volume manufacturing capabilities Sevcon will get the size to complete deals with major OEMs. "This has the potential to dramatically accelerate our growth," Boyle said.
