EpiPix Ltd. (Sheffield, England) was formed on January 20, 2020 and is based on research performed by Professor Tao Wang and his team at the University of Sheffield’s department of electronic and electrical engineering. This group is developing a reputation in gallium-nitiride and other III-N materials for wide bandgap optoelectronics.
EpiPix has an exclusive license to micro-LED technology from the university and has recruited Dennis Camilleri to lead the company as CEO and Stephen Pyke as commercialization manager. The university said the company is already collaborating with global corporations on microLED product developments.
EpiPix is able to demonstrate multi-coloured microLED arrays on single wafers with good light efficiency and uniformity. EpiPix is working on taking microLED pixel sizes down to 5 microns diameter and below to make for very high resolution close-to-the-eye displays.
“Currently, there are a number of fundamental challenges in fabricating high performance micro-LEDs with a diameter below 5 µm, which are particularly important for AR and VR micro-display,” said Professor Wang, in a statement issued by the university. “Very recently, we have developed a novel but cost-effective approach, achieving ultra-small and ultra-bright micro-LEDs with record efficiency. These results have also been published in a high-profile journal, ACS Photonics. The vision of EpiPix Ltd. aims to turn the major technological breakthrough into world-leading products, eventually becoming a global manufacturer in this area in the next five years.”
