However, Shell appears to have shifted its strategy by buying a different, larger European system supplier called NewMotion.

Under the terms of the new deal, Amsterdam-based NewMotion will still concentrate on smart-charging systems for homes, businesses and public parking spaces, as well as Shell’s service stations. NewMotion says this will help to turn more parking spaces into charging stations as well as improving users charging experience across Europe.

“We are very pleased to have such a strong investor that fully supports our mission, enabling us to further expand across Europe at a time when the transition to electric vehicles is gathering pace,” said Sytse Zuidema, CEO of NewMotion.

For hardware, NewMotion works with Alfen ICU, Liteon, eNovates, Ecotap and ABB, as well as charging partners IKEA, Q-Park, APCOA, AVA, Alphabet and Ahold and automotive partners Opel, Nissan, Volvo, Kia, Mitsubishi and Tesla.

For research, NewMotion works closely with TenneT, Stichting e-Laad, de Hogeschool van Amsterdam, de Universiteit van Eindhoven, Delaware and Mitsubishi.

This would appear to make the Allego deal a limited, pilot roll out. The 50kW Allego fast charging systems being installed (shown above) cover all three types of vehicle connector. The DC CCS Combo (DC) is  used by the BMW i3 and VW e-golf, the DC CHAdeMo by the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi Outlander while the Renault Zoë and Tesla models use an AC connector.

Allego is monitoring the EV market intensively says CEO Anja van Niersen “We see that people are willing to shift towards electric mobility. But a lack of appropriate level of charging infrastructure and interoperable charging services is one of their main concerns. Allego and Shell join forces by adding fast chargers at the right service stations. Shell now actively contributes in creating a reliable and open charging network. A network that is accessible for all EV drivers, despite the brand of the car.”

Allego is developing and operating a European Fast Charger Corridor across the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. In the Netherlands, 50 fast chargers have been developed. In Germany and Belgium, another 300 fast chargers were installed in 2016, but NewMotion claims to be the largest electric vehicle charging partner in Europe, encouraging Shell to scale up its involvement in electric charging technology.
