Siemens integrates Samotics industrial AI into analysis tools

Siemens Smart Infrastructure is integrating industrial AI power monitoring technology from Samotics in the Netherlands into its analysis tools.

The move is likely to trigger a bidding war for the startup between Siemens and investor ABB. Siemens has already acquired UK industrial AI startup Senseye.

Samotics has joined the Siemens Xcelerator partner programme, adding its industrial AI monitoring system for AC motors and rotating equipment based on electrical signature analysis (ESA) technology.

The ESA technology has been integrated into NXpower Monitor to provide asset health and energy efficiency insights for electric-driven equipment without needing external sensors. This extends NXPower Monitor’s capabilities to deliver an end-to-end asset monitoring offering for the entire energy distribution system.

This follows deals with customer such as South East Water  and a five year deal with Anglia Water in the UK to monitor electrical pumps and provide preventative maintenance via two different condition-based monitoring (CBM) technologies: ESA and vibration. ESA is being used for submerged assets, whose location makes it hard to acquire high-quality, high-frequency data. Because the electrical data can be captured remotely in the motor control centre, there is no need to install sensors on or even near the equipment.

This marks a move from time-based reactive maintenance regime to a condition-based, proactive maintenance approach which companies such as Siemens and ABB are also moving to for equipment.

NXpower Monitor enables the visualization and monitoring of electrical assets within electrical networks, providing health status, KPI calculation, energy monitoring, and monitoring of operational data from assets. Integrating the AI-powered ESA technology broadens its application to include the monitoring of AC motors and rotating equipment, all accessible through a single data dashboard.

ESA technology allows NXpower Monitor to conduct real-time analysis of high-quality current and voltage data, enabling the detection of electrical and mechanical faults up to five months before downtime happens. The system delivers comprehensive performance and efficiency insights, pinpointing areas with the highest electricity consumption, cost, and efficiency losses.

“The digitalization of energy distribution, automation systems, and networks brings many advantages. Not only does it lead to substantial savings in terms of time and money, it also significantly boosts efficiency and reliability. By adding Samotics to Siemens Xcelerator, our open ecosystem of certified partners, customers can benefit from an expanded offering. This reflects our continued innovation efforts, including the integration of advanced low voltage analysis into our digital caretaker NXpower Monitor,” said Stephan May, CEO of Electrification and Automation at Siemens Smart Infrastructure.

Jasper Hoogeweegen, CEO of Samotics says: “Unplanned downtime and energy waste are among the most expensive problems in industry. Traditional monitoring technologies do not adequately address these issues. However, through partnerships with forward-thinking organizations such as Siemens, customers are benefiting from ESA technology that delivers real-time, actionable information about the condition, performance, and energy efficiency of critical rotating equipment. This helps our clients to effectively improve the performance and energy efficiency of their critical assets.”
