Silicon Box favors Novara for Italian chiplet fab site

Singapore startup Silicon Box Pte. Ltd. is set to select Novara in the Piedmont region of Italy as the location for a previously announced €3.2 billion (about US$3.5 billion) chiplet packaging factory, according to a Reuters report.

If Novara is confirmed as the location it would coincide with that of a 300mm wafer plant constructed by MEMC Electronic Materials SpA, the Italian subsidiary of GlobalWafers Co. Ltd. of Taiwan (see GlobalWafers gains €100 million IPCEI subsidy for Italian wafer plant).

Silicon Box will likely receive an extensive subsidy from the Italian government in return for placing its component assembly facility in the country although the exact extent of the subsidy has not been disclosed.

Silicon Box has not finally decided on its location but is “leaning towards” Novara in preference to two other sites in northern Italy, the Reuters report quoted unnamed sources saying. These locations are in the Lombardy and Veneto regions, the report added.

The conclusion of Silicon Box’s search for a factory location could be announced on June 28, the report said.

Silicon Box was founded in 2021 by the founders of chip company Marvell – Sehat Sutardja and Weili Dai – and experienced chip packaging executive Byung Joon (BJ) Han. The company recently closed a US$200 million Series B funding round that valued the startup at over US$1 billion (see Singapore chiplet factory already shipping, raises US$200 million).
