Wi-SUN is becoming more popular and being widely deployed for smart utility, smart city and Industrial IoT applications. The standard has been developed to provide significant advantages over other LPWAN standards, especially its scalability and multi-vendor interoperability. Wi-SUN allows wireless networks to be extended to span distances of miles.

Silicon Labs decided to join the Wi-SUN Alliance’s board of directors to help quicken the worldwide adoption of Wi-SUN. The Wi-Sun alliance was founded to advance seamless, ubiquitous LPWAN connectivity through a worldwide, standards-based, interoperable solution.

“Wi-SUN is an ideal solution for smart metering, advanced metering infrastructure, power generation and distribution, as well as street lighting, large scale smart city infrastructure, and other industrial IoT applications,” said Ross Sabolcik, vice president of commercial and industrial IoT products at Silicon Labs. “As an open specification, Wi-SUN provides one of the world’s best mesh networking solutions for smart, connected IoT applications that require low-power, long range wireless connectivity over IPv6. We are delighted to join Wi-SUN’s board of directors to help drive advancement of the IEEE 802.15.4(g) standard.”

Silicon Labs has over 15 years of experience in the delivery of mesh networking solutions, and in that time, the company has deployed more than 250 million mesh nodes. Its Wireless Gecko platform was developed to support a broad range of mesh options that includes Wi-SUN, Zigbee, OpenThread, Z-Wave, and BLE Mesh to give designers the flexibility to choose the protocol that best suits each application.

The Wi-SUN Open Standard

Wireless Smart Ubiquitous Network Field Area Networks (Wi-SUN FAN) is an open standard that is based on the IEEE 802.15.4g specification, along with other IEEE 802 and IETF standards. The Wi-SUN Alliance developed the specification and now promotes the standard and manages the certification process ensuring that devices meet the specification and provide interoperability.
