Siltronic’s Singaporean wafer factory starts up
Siltronic AG (Munich, Germany) has started producing silicon wafers at its 300mm fab in Singapore.
Construction of the manufacturing facility was begun in 2021 with a budget of €2 billion to be spent by the end of 2024. The facility occupies a site the size of 20 soccer fields or about 150,000 square meters. The production ramp phase will commence from the beginning of 2024.
The wafer facility is expected to be cost-efficient due to a high degree of automation and proximity to the existing 200- and 300 mm fabs in Singapore.
Claudia Schmitt, CFO of Siltronic AG, said that customers have contributed significantly to the initial financing of the fab through prepayments.
“I am delighted to see that the test wafer production has started slightly ahead of schedule,” said Michael Heckmeier, CEO of Siltronic AG, in a statement.
