The developer, Unitronic, is positioning the sensor as an ‘artificial nose’ that could enable low-cost measurement and analysis of air-borne substances.
While conventional sensor arrays use a large number of different gas sensors to detect specific features of a compound, they each typically react differently to humidity and temperature, presenting long-term drift problems. By using a single detector, these problems are alleviated.
As the sensor is capable of detecting and measuring a range of gases, the company says it can be applied to the food, bio and pharmaceutical industries, as well as air and fire monitors.
