SiTime, Bosch aim MEMS at 5G, automotive and IoT
SiTime has worked with Bosch since 2009 and uses Bosch as a foundry to manufacture its MEMS-based timing products. SiTime has delivered more than one billion MEMS timing components that have been manufactured for the company by Bosch. Bosch itself has been a leader in MEMS technology since 1995 and has sold more than 9.5 billion MEMS sensors since then.
SiTime said it would now work with Bosch to develop manufacturing processes for next-generation MEMS resonator products for use in 5G communications, IoT and automotive applications. Improved resonators will be required to enable the higher speeds of 5G circuits, and to offer longer battery life in IoT and automotive applications SiTime said. Under the terms of the agreement Bosch will manufacture these resonators for SiTime in high volume.
“Over the next decade, the 5G, IoT, and automotive markets will drive the growth of the timing industry by creating a 200 billion unit opportunity,” said Rajesh Vashist, CEO of SiTime, in statement. “Automation, communications, and computing applications in these markets will require more features, higher accuracy and reliability from timing components.”
“Stable, reliable MEMS timing devices are needed for successful operation of new, high-bandwidth 5G, IoT and driver assistance systems,” said Jens Fabrowsky, executive vice president of automotive electronics at Robert Bosch GmbH, in the same statement.
