“Batteries and the power supply chips that control them are now starting to exceed the importance of the processors inside the devices,” said Sam Jaffe, senior research analyst with Navigant Research.  “This transformation has led to significant improvements in battery technologies and, in some cases, allowed for the introduction of completely new battery chemistries.”

Greater advances in energy density, cycle life, and product longevity are on the horizon, according to the report, as new silicon-based anodes begin to appear in batteries during the next few years.  Additionally, the first mass-produced lithium sulfur batteries, which employ a chemistry that could more than double energy density, are expected to begin appearing during the same timeframe.
