The i.MX 8M Mini applications processor supports voice interfaces for audio/video streaming devices at minimal cost. It combines up to four ARM Cortex-A53 cores operating up to 1.8GHz along with an ARM Cortex-M4 that operates at up to 400 MHz for low standby power consumption, requiring complex power management.

The BD71847AMWV integrates all power rails required by the processor as well as power supplies for DDR and common system IO. In addition to six DC-DC converters with efficiency of 95 per cent, the PMIC features programmable power sequencer for flexible power control and management, seamless hardware control interface to i.MX 8M Mini, buffered sleep clock and protection functions. Using analogue and bipolar power process to provide the high level of integration helps to shorten development time, to lower system BOM cost, and to minimize solution footprint.

The device integrates the six DC-DC buck converter with six LDOs, a 1.8V/3.3V power switch for SDXC cards, a 32kHz crystal driver and buffered output clock, extensive monitoring and protection circuits, and programmable sequencer and power state control logic. The 2.7V-5.5V input voltage range supports a variety of power sources, from single-cell Li-ion battery to USB and wall adapter. It includes a programmable power control sequencer and all power rails. Operating parameters such as output voltage, power state transitions and reset behaviour are configurable for OTP memory and/or software programmable.

The layout of the 56pin 7mm x 7mm QFN package is carefully designed to ensure easy connection to NXP’s i.MX 8M Mini applications processor and DDR memory, considerably reducing design effort and risk. The integration of all required reduces the number of external parts by 42 and mounting area by 42% compared with discrete solutions (assuming Type 3 PCB for single-sided mounting). With a double-sided board, the size could be reduced to 400mm2.

i.MX 8M availability

“ROHM is a valued i.MX ecosystem partner. The BD71847AMWV is a good choice for our i.MX 8M Mini applications processors customers looking to maximize performance. It is also available mounted on a reference board, providing a single-chip power solution optimized for processors,” said Leonardo Azevedo, i.MX Senior Director of Marketing at NXP Semiconductors.

ROHM will continue to expand its product portfolio to support future members of the i.MX 8M family and to offer optimized solutions for different applications and market segments.

Samples are available now with OEM production parts in August.
