Six more startups join Silicon Catalyst incubator

The companies range across the domains of audio, image and gas sensing to AI and optical processing and augmented reality in a contact lens. The incubator offers early-stage startups access to in-kind support from strategic partners such as ARM, STMicroelectronics, Bosch, Texas Instruments, Synopsys and TSMC.

The newly admitted companies are: AlphaICs, Lelantos Inc., Oculi Inc., Salience Labs Ltd., Sonical Inc. and Visual Dawn, whose descriptions follow.

AlphaICs Corp. (Milpitas, Calif.) a fabless semiconductor company led by CEO Pradeep Vajram, designs and develops AI co-processors for edge devices that cover inference and learning. The company’s Real AI Processor (RAP) is based on a proprietary architecture and makes use of a specialized Instruction Set Architecture (ISA), designed for accelerating AI workloads. The company claims RAP can scale from moble devices to the datacenter.

Lelantos Inc. (New York), formed at the beginning of 2020, is developing IoT-compatible gas sensors for threat detection, industrial safety, environmental and air quality monitoring as well as medical diagnostics. Lelantos sensors are based on piezoelectric resonator arrays that promise to reduce size, cost and power consumption compared with currently utilized systems.

Oculi Inc. (Columbia, Maryland), founded in 2016, makes the Sensing and Processing Unit (SPU), an integrated image sensor plus processing system to address edge visual processing. It is being targeted at traffic monitoring, analytics and tolling. Oculi is deployed on a US public highway and partnering with various companies to deliver products to market.

Salience Labs Ltd. (London) is a spin-off from Imperial College formed in 2020. Salience led by CEO Vaysh Kewada, is developing a hybrid photonic-electronic IC for AI processing. The photonic tensor processing unit (TPU) can be modulated at 100GHz and allows for massive parallelization through multiplexing. The photonic unit is being designed into an SoC to address AI inference.  The technology is based on decades of research collaboration between Oxford University and the University of Münster, Germany.

Sonical Inc. (San Mateo, Calif.), also a 2020 startup intends to put a computer in the ear to allow a host of novel applications – such as language translation – and to make the platform accessible is creating the EarOS operating system. Hearables will then allow personalized hearing using AI and audio processing.

Visual Dawn Inc. (Seattle, Wash.) was formed in 2019 is developing a contact lens based augmented reality hardware platform. A key to the system is a bio-compatible battery. The soft contact lens is designed to be disposable with an 8-hour useful battery life.
