The AI boom via server and HBM components drove the DRAM sector’s growth up 9.9 percent sequentially in the 4Q24, according to TrendForce.

The growth driven by rising contract prices for server DDR5 DRAMs and increased shipments of HBM DRAMs. This increased revenue for the top three DRAM suppliers –  Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron Technology. SK Hynix benefited the most, taking a 2 percentage points of market share off Samsung.

The first quarter of the year is traditionally a slow season for DRAM and so TrendForce predicts a decline for DRAM bit shipments in 1Q25. As demand weakens the pricing of conventional DRAM and HBM are projected to decline in 1Q25.

Samsung remained the top DRAM supplier $11.25 billion in revenue in 4Q24 but was impacted by shrinking LPDDR4 and DDR4 demand from PC OEMs and the smartphone sector. It only began concentrated shipments of HBM DRAMs towards the end of 2024. Although overall revenue was up its DRAM market share declined to 39.3 percent.

Meanwhile SK Hynix reported $10.46 billion in 4Q24 revenue with its market share rising to 36.6 percent driven by ramping of HBM3e bit shipments.

Micron only slightly increased its market share – to 22.4 percent – and secured the third position with $6.4 billion in revenue.
