SK Hynix, Sharp move up chip vendor ranking

Of these Japanese company Sharp was the most notable with a 62 percent increase first quarter sales. This propelled the company from 23rd in 1Q14 to 19th in 1Q15. This sales surge (88 percent up in yen) was almost entirely due to success in the CMOS image sensor market.

There were two new entrants into the top 20 ranking in 1Q15 – Sharp and pure-play foundry UMC, which replaced AMD and Nvidia. AMD’s sales dropped 26 percent year-over-year.

SK Hynix moved into 5th place in 1Q15, displacing Micron. And while MediaTek’s growth has slowed the company still posted a year-over-year sales increase of 12% to move into the top 10.

IC Insights includes foundries in the top 20 semiconductor supplier ranking since it has always viewed the ranking as a top supplier list, not a market share ranking, and realizes that in some cases the semiconductor sales are double counted. It should be noted that not all foundry sales should be excluded when attempting to create market share data. For example, although Samsung had a large amount of foundry sales in 1Q15, some of its foundry sales were to Apple. Since Apple does not resell these devices, counting these foundry sales as Samsung IC sales does not introduce double counting.
