Smart buildings, smartphones will drive IR detector market
Over the period 2015 to 2012 the market analysis firm is expecting a compound annual growth rate of 17 percent in terms of value and 14 percent in terms of units. This gives rise to the unusual situation of a prolonged rise in average selling price for units. This can be explained in terms of the changing mix of applications.
Yole has identified five out of nine applications for IR detection that will drive revenue growth over the period: spot thermometry in mobile devices, motion detection, smart buildings, HVAC and people counting.

Driven by smart lighting and smart buildings and design wins in mobile devices the IR detector market is set to be worth $500 million in 2020.
The small detector applications will continue to grow at double-digit growth rate through 2020 with design into smartphones and as additions to smart lighting. But they will be joined by array detectors, ranging from medium-sized, 4 by 4 and 16 by 16 pixels up to large-sized arrays of 32 by 32 pixels and above. The market for array sensors is expected to grow at in excess of 26 percent CAGR over the period 2015 to 2020.
