Smart city project near Vienna launched by Siemens
On July 3, the partners signed the contract that legally launches Aspern Smart City Research Society; in October, the consortium will start its activities. by October 1st. In Vienna’s North-east, a new multi-functional district with a size of 240 ha (about 1 square mile) will come into being. By 2030, the district will be turned into a ‘smart town’ with 20.000 inhabitants and 20.000 additional employments. The project offers the opportunity to develop a long-term integrated concept with technologies, products and solutions for an energy-optimized city – and all based on a real-world infrastructure. The goal is to make the system as a whole smarter. One measure towards this end is connecting buildings with different types of utilization such as residential and industrial buildings across the low-voltage power line.
In the future, building management systems will execute the energy exchange among buildings and thus optimize energy consumption on a local basis. For building owners and operators this opens the opportunity to actively participate in energy markets. In this scenario, information and communication technologies play a pivotal role. Innovative IT solutions will identify shortcomings, inefficient use and energy savings potential.
Among others, Aspern town will be supplied with energy generated from decentralized renewable sources. It also will utilize next-generation energy storage technologies.
The project is led by Siemens’ global Corporate Technology research department. Collaborating are building management experts and smart grid experts from Siemens as well as from local power suppliers and development companies.
