Smart devices to drive ‘explosive’ growth in embedded SW
This explosive growth is being driven by the adoption of smart devices in the consumer electronics and healthcare sector. The same technologies are also helping consumer electronics companies to boost production and operation processes by up to 40%.
Linux software and open-source RTOS software are two of the technologies expected to offer strong growth. The GMI analysis states that the global shipment of open-source RTOS increased by 8.5% in 2017 as compared to 2016.
The RTOS segment of the embedded software market is predicted to see a CAGR of more than 11% due to a surge in the demand for special-purpose hardware using real-time systems such as ThreadX, Windows CE, Fusion RTOS, LynxOS, and VxWorks.
The standalone system held a market share of more than 73% in 2017. Such systems encompass their own OS, user-created files, and virtual memory space. Digital cameras, video games consoles, mp3 players, and temperature measurement systems are some of the major applications of standalone systems.
Real-time systems are projected to register the highest growth with a CAGR of more than 12% during the forecast period. Real-time systems are classified into two types, soft and hard. The soft RTS offers less accuracy and strictness on time while hard RTS delivers the exact output at the required time.
The key players operating in the embedded software market are ENEA, Green Hills Software, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Advantech, Microchip, Mitsubishi, STMicroelectronics, Express Logic, LG CNS, Mentor Graphics, National Instruments, Segger, Texas, Renesas, HCL, Qualcomm, Toshiba, Via, Dexcel, Graphene, and Qualitat systems.
