Smart LED street lights partnership targets smart city roll-out
The partnership, which was unveiled at Light + Building, the world’s leading trade show for lighting and building services technology, is aiming accelerate the road to smart cities for municipalities, utilities, transportation departments and other outdoor lighting network operators. Networked LED public lighting systems deliver significant energy and operational savings, helping cities, utilities and other entities quickly establish a broad network canopy that can also be utilized for Smart City and Internet of Things (IOT) applications, such as traffic and parking management, environmental sensing and citizen safety.
The joint smart street light solution will be designed to enable luminaire manufacturers to take advantage of a pre-integrated networked photocell with auto-configuration and management capabilities, lowering costs and simplifying the end solution for customers. The collaboration will enable advanced capabilities such as wiring multiple sensors to a single driver, dynamic override commands, and advanced management of configuration files and firmware images across large-scale lighting networks.
The solution will build on Silver Spring’s IPv6- based Gen5 wireless networking platform and SLV6 smart city management software, and the Samsung Smart Lighting Module (SLM) that powers the Samsung Smart Lighting Platform (SLP). SLM is an all-in-one lighting application-specific wireless and wired connectivity solution that can be embedded into a sensor bus for smart cities and other IOT environments. Samsung SLM supports both wired and wireless communication protocols, including DALI and Bluetooth, to help operators seamlessly connect to various sensor networks and smart devices. SLM enables smart lighting luminaires to act as nodes for diverse smart lighting environments.
“Samsung and Silver Spring Networks share a common vision for the IoT. Large-scale outdoor lighting networks offer a viable path to smarter cities and safer communities, and provide a solid foundation for future Internet of Things applications,” said Dr. Jacob Tarn, Executive Vice President, LED Business Team, Samsung Electronics. “The Samsung and Silver Spring solution will leverage open standards to provide a simple, scalable and highly efficient long-term path for connecting Internet of Things devices.”
Silver Spring connects critical infrastructure IOT devices in global cities such as Chicago, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Melbourne, Mexico City, Paris, Sao Paulo, San Francisco, Singapore, Washington DC and others, including what is believed to be the largest networked street light project in the world, nearly 500 000 connected lights across Miami and South Florida. Silver Spring’s solution enables multiple applications and services to leverage a common network, control and data platform to help drive smart sustainability, transportation, energy efficiency, safety and economic development.
