As a central component of its Future-Type concept study, JLR presented a steering wheel equipped with artificial intelligence and capable of storing a user profile – seat settings, favourite radio stations, music preferences, frequently used routes, etc. – of the respective driver. In addition to the memory function, the steering wheel is a versatile multifunctional instrument that can be administered by voice control.
The steering wheel can also be used for a wide range of tasks in the home, in addition to the normal car functions. For example, it can wake up its owner at the right time on the basis of the stored calendar data and the knowledge of the planned routes and the current traffic situation, or the autonomous vehicle can be summoned to the doorstep in time. The electronic butler in steering wheel form is named after Malcolm Sayer, who worked as a Jaguar designer in the 1950s and 1960s. Among other things, the legendary Jaguar E-Type and the Le Mans winning cars C- and D-Type can be traced back to his designs.
To enable Sayer to perform all these various tasks it is, of course, possible to remove the steering wheel from the car. After the journey the driver can take it home – yes, according to the ideas of its designers, it even could be the only part of a car that you really own in the future.
