
Smart tape sensor ships for water leak detection
Laiier in London has started its first production run of a smart tape that acts as a water leak detector
Severn WLD is the first implementation of Laiier’s Severn technology. The high resolution of the sensor allows the system to detect the presence of just a couple of drops of water. This allows leaks to be detected early before they cause damage.
The smart tape electrodes are combined with a LoRa low power wide area networking (LPWAN) technology to feed data back to the cloud from a unit that weighs 82g. The array of 12 smart tape electrodes per sensor vary by size, depending on the area that needs to be monitored, and have a maximum resolution of 0.1 ml of water.
The Severn Board powers the sensor and checks every minute the presence of water. Once it detects a leak forming, it sends an emergency message periodically via LoRaWAN to the Surface to Cloud dashboard until the leak has been fixed.
The smart tape system requires a peak current of 105mA from a 3.6V AA lithium Li-SOCl₂ cell that will last for 18 months.
Due to a limited production run, the company is distributing the first batch to a limited number of partners but says it is scaling production.
