Smartphone manufacturing returns to Germany
The company said it has done this as part of a sustainable development drive with the intention of reducing Carbon Mobile’s emissions. The manufacturing is performed by electronic manufacturing services provider Ingram Micro using a former Motorola factory.
Carbon Mobile was founded in 2016 and said it aims to minimize the use of hard-to-recycle materials within its phones and maximize recyclability. The shell of the phone is made from a carbon fibre monocoque design.
The Carbon 1 MkII is an Android smartphone with 6-inch AMOLED display. The processor is a Mediatek P90 Octacore operating at up to 2.2GHz with an Imagination PowerVR GM9446 GPU. It has a 20-megapixel front-facing camera and 16-megapixel rear-facing camera.
“We have committed ourselves to sustainability and quality in the production of smartphones in Europe,” said Firas Khalifeh, founder and CEO of Carbon Mobile, in a statement. “With the new location in Germany, we can reduce our exhaust emissions for the production and transport of our devices even further and create new jobs in the coming years.”
Carbon Mobile has partnership with an organization called Greenhub to collect 500 grams of plastic to be collected for every device sold to make the smartphone “plastic-neutral.”
Future generations of smartphones will include bio-mass based carbon fibre and enhanced repairability features to promote longer lifecycles for products.
