Smartphone proximity sensors replaced with AI

By Wisse Hettinga

Usually, hardware proximity sensors are placed at the top of the smartphone, meaning bezels or notches have to be designed in. EarSense is a software AI solution that replaces the phone’s hardware proximity sensor.

EarSense’s AI algorithms identify a person’s face when it is close to the screen and turns it off for the duration of the call, similar to how the proximity sensor operates. Removing the hardware sensor allows smartphone designers to use the whole front of the phone instead of incorporating a bezel or notch.
