SmartSleep technologies that might come as a wake up call
What is happening to our sleep? According to the American Sleep Association, 50 to 70 million of US adults have a sleep disorder, like snoring and insomnia. Blame it on our nonstop social lifestyle or other events that keeps you awake at night. Perhaps you suffer the negative experiences of sleep disorder yourselves – it is not always easy to deal with. Without going into detail what a sleep ‘order’ is, many companies and research institutes come with solutions to give you the 7 hour deep sleep that you need to function.
Earlier this year Philips launched the SmartSleep, a headband and app solution that will monitor your ‘slow wave-’ or ‘deep’ sleep. Based on that measurements the app sends out low volume audible triggers that will improve and continue your deep sleep.
The headband has two sensors that measure when you enter into the deep sleep mode, your heartbeat and breathing ritmes go down and your muscles relax. The system starts sending out low volume trigger tones that will help you maintain that sleep. The volume and the frequency of the tones will be calculated based on the measurement and will differ from person to person. In the morning you can check the sleep report that the app generates.
One of the sensors in the headband will need replacement every 3 nights. That figure can differ from person to person. A replacement pack of 30 sensors will be around 30 dollars, now, that might be a reason to stay up!
At the gadgets show IFA in Berlin, this September, Philips will be showing this technology again.
