SoftBank Group, the parent company of IP licensor Arm, is in discussions about acquiring Ampere Computing LLC, a vendor of server chips based on the Arm architecture, according to Bloomberg.
Ampere was considering an IPO back in April 2022 but eventually shelved the plan. There have also been rumours that Arm might acquire Ampere or that Intel Corp. could.
Now SoftBank is in talks valuing Ampere at about US$6.5 billion including debt, according to unnamed sources cited by Bloomberg. A deal could be announced in a matter of weeks. Oracle owns 29 percent of Ampere with an option to increase its holding to take control.
Neither SoftBank, Ampere nor Arm commented on the possibility of a deal, the news agency said.
