Founded in 2016, Lightyear is developing an electric family car with solar panels seamlessly integrated all over the vehicle. Last September, the company unveiled its first commercial vehicle, Lightyear One, expected to be ready sometime in 2020 but already on sale as a pre-order. The startup also displayed physical solar roof and chassis prototypes.

The Challenging Concepts category is made especially for revolutionary new ideas, with the potential to completely change the industry. Much of the competition focused on reducing emissions and making the Dutch automotive industry future-proof. The Automotive Innovation Award Audience Award is a special prize that was created to make Dutch innovations with a major impact on mobility better known to the general public. Through tremendous public support Lightyear took an early lead in the race for the award.

“The Netherlands has proven to be able to come with unexpected solutions and major breakthroughs. We hope to realize the transition to true zero-emission driving with our team. Winning these awards is an important recognition and support for the work the team is doing every day”, said Lex Hoefsloot, CEO of Lightyear.
