Sondrel agrees to buy Imagination SoC design group
The purchase price was not revealed.
The IMGworks division is an SoC design team that has been used to help licensees get the most from IP licensing. It was known that Imagination was trying to offload IMGworks but that was before it was revealed that Imagination is now also trying to sell its MIPS and Ensigma businesses (Imagination puts MIPS, Ensigma up for sale).
IMG-Works as a chip design operation putting together system-chip platforms based on IP cores. IMG-Systems which added firmware and software on top of IP cores, and was responsible for Imagination’s Creator board, has been folded into the MIPS business unit.
The IMGworks engineering team will join with Sondrel’s existing engineering consultancy to create a combined IC design capability comprising more than 250 employees.
Sondrel is well known for its ability to physically implement designs and in 2015 it created a design and verification business unit with a focus on image processing applications.
Sondrel also recently decided to concentrate on application-specific expertise in ADAS systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning and machine vision so IMGworks is good fit, Sondrel said.
“Video and graphics related business is going through a steep growth curve, driven not only by gaming and infotainment systems but also by the accelerated computational needs of the AI (artificial intelligence) environment that enables many of the new automotive, enterprise cloud and Iot related products,” said Graham Curren, CEO of Sondrel, in a statement.
He continued: “Combining our existing design-to-GDSII expertise with the wider range of engineering expertise within the IMGworks team will allow us to deliver comprehensive system-on-chip project execution, as well as other innovative solutions leveraging GPU technologies.”
